I first heard this carol sung by June Tabor, on Maddy Prior's album "Ballads and Candles". She sang it unaccompanied, so I've taken the same approach, although my interpretation is slightly different to hers.
Hers is, of course, better.
The song itself is from Castleton in Derbyshire, where they have many interesting carols.
lyrics
It was on Christmas Day
And all in the morning
Our saviour was born, our dear heavenly King
And was not this a joyful thing?
And sweet Jesus they called him by name
It was on the same day
And all in the morning
That shepherds were led to our heavenly King
And was not this a joyful thing?
And sweet Jesus they called him by name
It was on the seventh day
And all in the morning
That wise men were led to our heavenly King
And was not this a joyful thing?
And sweet Jesus they called him by name
'Twas Holy Wednesday
And all in the morning
That Judas betrayed our dear heavenly King
And was not this a woeful thing?
And sweet Jesus they called him by name
For thirty silver pieces
He sold our saviour
And Peter thrice denied our dear heavenly King
And was not this a woeful thing?
And sweet Jesus they called him by name
'Twas Sheer Thursday
And all in the morning
They laid a crown of thorns on our heavenly King
And was not this a woeful thing?
And sweet Jesus they called him by name
