It was on Christmas Day And all in the morning Our saviour was born, our dear heavenly King And was not this a joyful thing? And sweet Jesus they called him by name It was on the same day And all in the morning That shepherds were led to our heavenly King And was not this a joyful thing? And sweet Jesus they called him by name It was on the seventh day And all in the morning That wise men were led to our heavenly King And was not this a joyful thing? And sweet Jesus they called him by name 'Twas Holy Wednesday And all in the morning That Judas betrayed our dear heavenly King And was not this a woeful thing? And sweet Jesus they called him by name For thirty silver pieces He sold our saviour And Peter thrice denied our dear heavenly King And was not this a woeful thing? And sweet Jesus they called him by name 'Twas Sheer Thursday And all in the morning They laid a crown of thorns on our heavenly King And was not this a woeful thing? And sweet Jesus they called him by name

The holly and the ivy when they are full grown Of all the trees in the wood the holly bears the crown Oh the rising of the sun and the running of the deer The playing of the organ sweet singing in the choir The holly bears a blossom as white as any flower And Mary bore Jesus Christ to be our saviour Oh the rising of the sun and the running of the deer The playing of the organ sweet singing in the choir The holly bears a berry as red as any blood And Mary bore Jesus Christ to do sinners good Oh the rising of the sun and the running of the deer The playing of the organ sweet singing in the choir The holly bears a prickle as sharp as any thorn And Mary bore Jesus Christ on Christmas Day in the morn Oh the rising of the sun and the running of the deer The playing of the organ sweet singing in the choir The holly bears a bark as bitter as any gall And Mary bore Jesus Christ to save us all Oh the rising of the sun and the running of the deer The playing of the organ sweet singing in the choir

Wassail! Wassail all over the town! Our toast it is white and our ale it is brown Our bowl it is made of the white maple tree With the wassailing bowl we'll drink to thee! So here is to Cherry and to his right cheek! Pray God send our master a good piece of beef And a good piece of beef that we all may see With the wassailing bowl we'll drink to thee! And here is to Dobbin and to his right eye! Pray God send our master a good Christmas pie And a good Christmas pie that we may all see With our wassailing bowl we'll drink to thee! So here is to Broad May and to her broad horn! May God send our master a good crop of corn And a good crop of corn that we may all say With the wassailing bowl we'll drink to thee! And here is to Fillpail and to her left ear! Pray God send our master a happy new year And a happy new year as e'er he did see With our wassailing bowl we'll drink to thee! And here is to Colly and to her long tail! Pray God send our master he never may fail A bowl of strong beer; I pray you draw near And our jolly wassail it's then you shall hear Come butler come fill us a bowl of the best Then we hope that your soul in heaven may rest But if you do draw us a bowl of the small Then down shall go butler, bowl and all! Then here's to the maid in the lily-white smock Who tripped to the door and slipped back the lock Who tripped to the door and pulled back the pin For to let these jolly wassailers in.

about

Winter is a great time of year. A time for feasting and merriment, long cosy nights snuggled up with the cat, and it's also when traditional music crawls out of the woodwork and takes centre stage in the form of Christmas carols. This album is a collection of experiments with those songs, and may grow over time.
